Parents Bill of Rights

Parents Bill of Rights

Thursday, April 21, 2022

There have been multiple attempts in the Colorado State Legislature to implement legislation known as the "Parents Bill of Rights".

Prior versions proposed in the Colorado House have specifically enumerated items like religion, instructions on sexuality, and mandatory parental participation plans. While there is merit to discussion of these topics, I understand that they are controversial and might even be policies best left to local school boards.

On April 11, 2022, Senator Bob Gardner (R-Colorado Springs) introduced SJR 22-011, known as the Parental Bill of Rights.  This resolution set forth eleven basic rights that Colorado parents should have.

Studies have shown that increased parental involvement in education correlates with higher GPAs, higher test scores and increased attendance.

The bill was heard by the State Affairs Committee on April 19, and was killed by Democrats.

I am supportive of Colorado SJR-22, which defines eleven specific items as parental rights.  I would support or introduce similar legislation in Nevada.

The actual bill can be read at
